Colorado Auctions Rights to Cannabis-Themed License Plates to Benefit State’s Disability Funding Committee

DENVER — Today, the Colorado Disability Funding Committee launched an auction for the rights to 10 official state license plate configurations with cannabis-themed phrases including NUGGET, COHEMP, REEFER, and GRASS. Auction proceeds are used to provide grants to support disability application assistance and innovative programs designed to benefit people with disabilities. The auction has been running annually since 2021 and has generated over $96,000. 

“The Colorado Disability Funding Committee has been an incredible support to the many nonprofits and local partners statewide working to improve life and increase opportunities for Coloradans with disabilities. This auction continues to be a meaningful way to celebrate Colorado’s cannabis industry while making an impact in the lives of others,” said Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera. 

Individuals participating in the auction can bid on the right to own the use of the configuration of letters and numbers on their Colorado license plate or have the ability to purchase a novelty plate and retain the exclusive rights to use the configuration on their Colorado license plate at a later date. The buyer also has the rights to resell the configuration through the Colorado Disability Funding Committee in the future. Individuals are responsible for paying all standard registration fees, a personalized plate production fee, and any additional fees for a designer background, including the 4 historic backgrounds that are now available and also benefit the Colorado Disability Funding Committee, if they do not want the standard white and green license plate. 

The 2023 auction featured DANK and MJ, which sold for $600 and $520, respectively.  Bidding is online at coloradoplates.org and remains open until 4:20 p.m. Mountain Time on April 27, 2024. Graphics of the license plate configurations in this auction can be found in this folder. 

The state reminds the public it is never a good idea to mix driving and cannabis. Cannabis impairs critical abilities needed to drive safely, which can result in a crash. A DUI can cost more than $13,500 and include jail time, loss of license and more.
