Colorado Mobilizes Resources to Support California Fires

Monday, January 13, 2025

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis and the Division of Fire Prevention and Control provided an update on the Colorado resources that the state has provided to fight the devastating fires in California.

“We are heartbroken by the lives lost and touched by these fires, which remind us that fire can strike anytime and anywhere. Colorado is sadly no stranger to the destruction that fires can cause in our communities. We are proud to step up and help the southern California communities that are being impacted, and I am deeply appreciative of the women and men from state government and from local governments across Colorado who are lending a hand in California’s time of need. Beyond fighting and containing the fires, we know there is a long road ahead and Colorado is here to help our fellow Americans,” said Governor Jared Polis.

Mike Morgan, Director of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention & Control, concurred. “DFPC and the Colorado Fire Service remain committed to supporting our partners and neighbors in times of need, exemplifying the spirit of collaboration and mutual aid that is fundamental to wildfire response across the West.”

On January 8th, DFPC’s Multi-Mission Aircraft (MMA) was deployed to California at the request of CAL FIRE. The aircraft, which departed Colorado that afternoon with a pilot and two Mission Sensor Operators on board, is being used to gather vital intelligence to aid firefighting efforts on the ground.

In addition to the MMA, Colorado mobilized nine strike teams, consisting of nearly 50 engines and overhead personnel, to assist in suppressing the fires. Interagency dispatch centers in Pueblo, Northern Colorado, Durango, Grand Junction, and Craig as well as the Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center undertook the monumental task of matching resources with requests and mobilizing the strike teams to California.

The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control also provided three agency representatives to act as liaisons for all of our Colorado resources, ensuring that personnel are well taken care of.
