Lt Governor Primavera, Colorado Legislators Fly Juneteenth Flag at Colorado State Capitol

Tuesday, June 18, 2024

DENVER - Today, Lt Governor Primavera, joined by members of the Colorado legislature, raised the Juneteenth flag at the Colorado State Capitol. In 2022, Governor Polis signed legislation that made Juneteenth an official state holiday

“Today, as we raise the Juneteenth flag, I am proud to commemorate this important American holiday. On Juneteenth, we celebrate and honor the joy that this holiday has embodied in the Black community for more than 150 years. This is an important reminder that we must continue working together to protect and expand our freedoms, and build a Colorado for all,” said Lt. Governor Primavera.

“Celebrating the holiday and SB22-139 which allowed Juneteenth to be recognized as a state holiday. I encourage people to research this day and why it is significant in American history. Thank you to the bill sponsors and all of those who supported this effort,” said Representative Bacon.

“This Emancipation Day reminds us of the atrocities our ancestors endured and how we must never give up hope in uncertain times," said Rep. Herod. "Juneteenth uplifts the voices of the Black community and showcases our perseverance. I’m proud to recognize Juneteenth as Colorado's 11th state holiday so it can finally receive all the formal celebration and reflection it deserves.”
